Therefore, when developing AI technologies, we must be aware of the imperative of practical and moral principles. It’s necessary to consider “Can we?” and, probably more importantly, “Should we?”

The domain of Artificial Intelligence ethics is so much more than the outer limits of machine learning algorithms and data sets. It shows the trustworthy AI impact on individuals and society while representing every fabric of our ethical manner.

So, what I’m trying to say is that the AI ethics realm delves into the problem of decision-making, transparency, fairness, and accountability in a world where machines begin to display significant influence in human lives. Therefore, it’s implied that there must be a strong balance between AI technology development and the preservation of our shared values, human dignity, and social justice.

What are ethics in AI?

AI ethics is a system containing moral principles, values, guidelines, and standards that ensure responsible design, development, deployment, and use of Artificial Intelligence technology. The ethical practices aim to ensure that AI technologies not only simulate human intelligence but also align with our human rights and values and serve the greater good of society.

With big data coming to light, companies tend to focus more and more on achieving automation and data-driven decisions. This is with the sole intention of improving business performance and productivity. While at the beginning, companies have had a bad experience with some of the first AI applications with biased AI research and data sets.

As a result of these bad experiences, the need for new ethics guidelines has emerged because many researchers and data scientists showed concerns about the ethics of AI. Since lack of diligence in the artificial intelligence field can result in costly penalties because of regulatory and legal issues and exposure, the leading companies have taken the initiative to address concerns in shaping the AI regulations and, therefore, define better ethical guardrails.

Since AI systems can make impressive decisions (stimulate human intelligence), such as autonomous vehicles capable of navigating roads and AI algorithms determining credit eligibility, it’s important to have ethical guardrails. Having ethical standards will ensure that responsibility is not evaded, and everyone who crosses the line with AI decisions is held responsible.

Ethical use of AI will prevent AI systems from causing harm, whether it’s discrimination, unintended negative consequences, or bias. Without ethical guardrails, AI could have bad and harmful behavior.

Moreover, because artificial intelligence preserves biases in training data, it can often lead to unjust outcomes. For this purpose, ethical practices mandate that AI systems must be designed to be fair and respective toward any human race, gender, or background.

This being said ethical AI should be transparent and enable the users to understand how the decisions are made. With this explainability, artificial intelligence builds trust and confidence among users who use the AI systems.

As I just mentioned, some of the ethical challenges that can occur when it comes to the malicious use of artificial intelligence – it’s time to elaborate more on the topic! I want to clarify the fact that challenges are common in AI ethics because of the emerging technologies that use artificial intelligence. So, somewhat it is expected to have challenges from different areas. Let’s take a look at some key areas and how we can protect our core values.

Unintended bias

Given the fact that AI constantly learns from historical data, if the data contains biases, then it can lead to unintended mistakes. There have been instances of bias and discrimination across many intelligent systems that have made users raise ethical questions about the use of artificial intelligence.

For context, I’ll give you an example of what happened to Amazon when they tried to use AI models for hiring practices. The company tried to automate its efforts and simplify the hiring process by using AI, but unfortunately, it resulted in biased potential candidates by gender for their open technical roles. This eventually led to them scraping the project and raised questions of ethical issues about the use of AI in this particular practice. The main one is what data scientists should focus on when evaluating candidates for a specific role.

So, as businesses (especially the private sector) try to implement AI systems into their workflows, they become more and more aware of AI ethics and core values. This awareness leads to starting discussions about ethical AI use and, therefore, participating to make it better.

Transparency and explainability

Since many AI machine learning models operate as “black box” models, we’re not fully aware of how they process data and how they act in decision-making. For example, many times, the users are unable to understand how a specific AI system has come to a specific conclusion. This shouldn’t be the case because if artificial intelligence is not transparent, then it won’t result in a trustworthy AI system.

And it’s no secret that we, as users, avoid using or adopting systems of which we lack information to understand how they work. Sure, we can go along with some simpler features that are part of the technology we use daily, like facial recognition software.

But on the other hand, I’m sure no one would walk the lengths to implement artificial intelligence in healthcare or finance if they can’t understand how it works. This is why it’s very important that we understand the problem and how potential AI solution makes all the decisions and predictions in order to solve it. If the AI solution works, then it’s safe to say that there’s been a successful AI lifecycle.


As AI models are relatively new technologies, there is still no universal legislation that globally regulates AI systems. However, AI researchers from many countries are trying to implement ethical guardrails as a local government regulation.

Like many fields, the artificial intelligence domain has to progress in small steps. For example, suppose a manufacturer decides to release fully autonomous self-driving cars and therefore previously hasn’t been associated with intelligent systems in cars. In that case, that car is most likely to fail and harm someone.

But nowadays, the practices are aligning with ethical AI design that is augmentative with human capabilities rather than replace them. So, the main thing that is being emphasized is human-AI collaboration.

This means that there are more and more opportunities for employees to work with AI systems while improving their skills and productivity. Instead of job displacement, it will result in better relationships workers have with technology.

Protect the privacy and security of data – The primary purpose of AI ethics is to protect the data and ensure it remains secure. Data protection preserves individual privacy rights and decreases the risk of any data breaches that might endanger it.

Benefit clients and markets – AI ethics prevent unfair advantages and manipulations of the markets. This builds trust among clients and customers, ensuring them that AI-powered software operates with integrity, which will keep the healthy competition going.

  • Policy – Policy refers to developing the rightful frameworks for establishing regulations and standardization. Ethical AI policies should address how to deal with legal issues if anything goes astray. It’s standard practice for companies to incorporate policies, so the same goes for AI code. However, the effectiveness of the code of conduct will depend on employees to follow it.
  • Education – Everyone working on developing artificial intelligence or using it must understand all related policies to it. This way, all the key considerations and potential negative outcomes of unethical AI and biased data can be avoided. The biggest concern about AI automation is the possibility of sensitive data leaks and unfavorable actions.
  • Technology – Companies that work on developing AI systems need an implemented architecture that will automatically discover and resolve unethical behaviour and biased data for their development to result in beneficial ai ultimately. Malicious use of AI is already present, in fact, it first started with the public release of ChatGPT, and then the other AI apps just followed. Today, there are already thousands of AI-powered applications, and some of them can be used in bad faith and threaten human rights. For example, you’ve probably come across AI-generated videos and pictures of celebrities that are fake, but once they’re posted online, not everyone can recognize that behind the deed is actually artificial intelligence. After all, people believe what they want to believe. This was just a simple malicious use of AI that can lead to endless rumors, so who can guarantee that someone will not do something like this on a company brand to affect their reputation negatively? This is why there must be AI ethics in model outputs to prevent bitter use from happening and protect human rights as well as social media attacks but also cyberattacks that can be incredibly harmful.

  • Asilomar AI Principals highlight long-term safety, beneficial AI, and research ethics. In fact, they stated the following: “We are committed to ensuring that AI benefits all of humanity.
  • The Partnership on AI also calls attention to responsible AI use to address social justice, challenges, collaboration, and inclusivity. They showed how important ethical AI is by stating, “We are committed to advancing the responsive use of AI technologies to promote the well-being of humanity.
  • Google is yet another gigantic company that showed its principles. They highlighted fairness, accountability, and privacy as the main principles to avoid potential harmful bias in AI technology. Google gave the following statement on the topic: “We aim to develop AI for broad societal impact, ensuring it benefits everyone.

Looking at the principles and statements in ethics of AI, they allude to the same thing – a safe use of Artificial intelligence. It might not sound so harsh now, but when predicting what the future holds for machine learning and AI there must be policies and ethics that will protect humanity from getting out of control.

Many have expressed their opinion that the AI codes of ethics can quickly become outdated in this rapidly evolving industry. This is why it requires a more proactive approach. There is a fundamental problem with the current AI code of ethics – it’s reactive when, in fact, it should be proactive. The background of this is that we tend to define bias, then we try to identify it in order to eliminate it. So, for how long can we approach the problem this way? To me, it feels like an infinite loop.

AI ethics aims to enforce unbiased development of AI systems that will play significant roles in the fields we need most and affect us the most. For context, fairness and transparency in sectors like healthcare, finance, and criminal justice can be of great significance to humanity.

Another thing, in my opinion, that will become more and more present is the Human-AI collaboration. This is very logical to assume because it kind of makes the whole package of humanity, emotion, and logic. With AI technology, employees can become way more skilled, effective, and efficient.

However, the thing that I’m most curious about is autonomous weapons. For sure, there have been public announcements for the weaponization of artificial intelligence, but the idea is still harsh. It’s normal to assume that giving autonomous power to a robot made for military combat is dangerous. Hence, the concerns and talks about robots taking over humankind become more and more understandable because AI weapons have the potential to become way more dangerous than human-operated weapons. For this cause, there’s even a petition, “Future of Life,” to ban AI weapons for good, which is signed by admirable physicists like Stephen Hawking and Max Tegmark.

Moreover, there’s a big concern about singularity and the fact that self-learning AI could become powerful to the level where humans could not prevent it from achieving its goals. There’s even a term for it – superintelligence. Superintelligence refers to independent technical capacities of making plans and executing them. It’s assumed that superintelligent AI could overcome any obstacle to achieve its goal, which could cause many unintended consequences.

This is why AI ethics should be proactive in order to protect us from unwanted outcomes.
